Thomas Jefferson Plans Winter Reading Fest
Encouraging reading and getting children excited about winter are the goals of a “Winter Reading Fest 2003” scheduled at Thomas Jefferson School in Hoffman Estates for the week of February 18-21.
Twenty-eight local personalities have agreed to serve as guest readers, including the Hoffman Estates mayor and fire chief, the president of the Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce, the school’s DARE officer, former Bears football player Jim Schwantz, the Fremd High School football coach along with football and basketball players from Fremd, PTA representatives, members of District 15 Superintendent John Conyers’ staff, and retired teachers. These individuals will read winter-themed stories to the students, talk about their favorite books, and answer student questions about their jobs.
In preparation for the fest, the school has been decorated in a winter theme, including snowflakes made by each Thomas Jefferson student. Outside the school’s Learning Resource Center (LRC), a special reading nook has been readied for classes to visit and students to spend free reading time. Games and other activities will be available for students, including Web quests using a special winter Web page created by LRC teacher Cindy Clenard. Each student will receive a bookmark specially designed by the Thomas Jefferson Student Council for the Winter Fest. Also during February, the school’s morning television broadcasts are featuring individual students presenting book talks about books they have read.
On the last hour of the school day on February 21, younger students and older students will be paired in “buddy classes” for special activities relating to reading, including readers’ theatre, poetry writing, and reading instructions for scientific experiments such as making snow crystals.
