February Employee of the Month: Barb Templeman, Resource Center Assistant, Hunting Ridge School
Barb Templeman has been in her job at Hunting Ridge’s Resource Center for the past 17 years, but she still finds it fun and never dull! Barb is well known around the school for her outstanding bulletin boards, for which she has been responsible over the past 13 years. She designs and maintains two huge bulletin boards in the hallway leading to the Learning Resource Center.
Her bulletin boards are “curriculum-based, current event-based, and holiday boards the entire school can appreciate,” noted her nominator. Among the topics her wall-sized boards have showcased are Egypt, Rome, animals, flags, Colonial America, and many more. She researches themes, finds appropriate materials, laminates them, then puts parent and student volunteers to work to help assemble them. Some of the boards feature questions that require student research to answer. “Barb continually searches for new ideas,” her nominator said. “She puts 100 percent effort in 100 percent of the time.” Once a bulletin board is ready to be phased out, Barb files away the elements for possible reuse at a later time.
Of course, bulletin boards are just part of Barb’s job. She also orders and processes books, coordinates the monthly decorations in the LRC, trains parent and student volunteers, and helps teachers and others throughout the building as required. She was a valued member of the school’s Blue Ribbon team, typing the lengthy application and entering all the changes and edits as the deadline neared.
Barb and her husband Glenn, an accountant, live in Fox River Grove, where they moved three years ago after living in Rolling Meadows for 24 years. Their three children, Dina (married and living in Tampa, FL), Brian, and Scott, all attended District 15 schools.
In her leisure time, Barb is particularly interested in quilting. She took a quilting class at Rolling Meadows Park District about ten years ago, she said, “and I’ve been hooked ever since.” In addition to quilts, she makes quilted table runners, wall hangings, place mats, and even curtain valances. Other hobbies include reading, yoga, fishing in the summertime, working in the garden, and painting and decorating her home. Barb collects teddy bears, which she dresses appropriately for the holidays, and she even has a few bunnies!
