Twenty District 15 Students Selected for Space Camp
Twenty junior high students with special needs from Community Consolidated School District 15 schools have been selected to participate in the U.S. Space and Rocket Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, in May 2002. District 15 collaborates with the Space is Special Foundation to train students for Space Camp competition. The district is committed to motivating students with special needs to become more interested in math, science, and technology by providing "hands-on/minds-on" learning experiences.
Prior to attending space camp, the student "astronauts" train for four months to prepare to compete in a shuttle mission simulation, a space trivia bowl, and a rocket design and launch. "We are very proud to be a part of this special program. In past years, our students with special needs have successfully competed against teams of regular education students, won awards, and proven to themselves and others how much they can accomplish," said Darrell Mittelheuser, Director of Student Services. "This is a great opportunity for our students—they'll learn so much."
