Schools, Students Respond To September 11 Tragedy With Patriotism, Generosity

The tragic events of September 11 have had a profound effect on the district’s students, and schools and staff members across the district have responded in a variety of ways to help students understand and respond appropriately. Among the many activities related to the situation have been:

--Several schools organized fund-raisers or coin collections for the American Red Cross and other relief efforts.

--Students showed their patriotism by wearing red, white, and blue clothing on specified days.

--Some classes wrote letters of appreciation to rescue workers or to others they regard as heroes.

--Art projects in a number of schools featured flags and other patriotic themes.

--Many language arts teachers encouraged students to express their feelings by journaling or writing essays, poems, or songs about the events.

--Classes in some schools—particularly those for older children—provided a forum for discussion of the events as they unfolded.

--Teachers in some classrooms used the situation to initiate discussions focusing on tolerance and/or patriotism.
