Lake Louise Students Celebrate Illinois Prairie Week
Sixth-grade students at Lake Louise School celebrated Illinois Prairie Week September 16-22 with a variety of projects including work on the school’s prairie plot, replacing a chip walk through the plot with chips donated by the Village of Palatine, creative writing centering on topics related to prairies, study of prairie plants and animals, history of the early settlers of local prairie areas, including displays of antique clothing from the collection of teacher Connie Rawa, and a quilting demonstration by the Palatine Historical Society. This is the third year Lake Louise students have observed Illinois Prairie Week, declared by state statute for the purpose of demonstrating the value of preserving and re-establishing native Illinois prairies. By the end of this school year, Lake Louise hopes to be certified by the National Wildlife Association as a schoolyard habitat.
