Sandburg Students Do Space Simulation

Who: Eighth-grade science students from Carl Sandburg Junior High Science teacher Joyce Meyer

What: Simulation of the launch of the Mars Odyssey satellite. Launched April 7, 2001, by NASA, and successfully placed into orbit around Mars on October 24, 2001, Mars Odyssey is one of two satellites now in orbit studying Mars.

For the launch simulation, students will have assigned roles (mission manager, public affairs officer, etc.) and will work together as a team to execute the launch. They will also have to resolve a real problem—a misaligned solar panel—which actually occurred during a NASA satellite launch (not the Mars Odyssey launch).

When: 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, or 9 a.m. Thursday, May 9

Where: David Hill Mission Control Center (behind Kimball Hill School, 2905 Meadow Dr., Rolling Meadows)

Contact: Carl Sandburg Science Teacher Joyce Meyer, (847) 963-7838
