District 15 Staff Members Honored by State Board of Education
Two staff members from Community Consolidated School District 15—an assistant superintendent and a teacher—earned top honors in the “Those Who Excel” education awards program of the Illinois State Board of Education.
Linda Vass, assistant superintendent for personnel and human services, received an Award of Excellence and Barbara Figlewicz, a teacher of fifth- and sixth-grade classes at Gray M. Sanborn School, Palatine, received an Award of Meritorious Service.
The Those Who Excel awards program annually recognizes and honors individuals and teams who have made outstanding contributions to public and non-public elementary and secondary education.
“The Those Who Excel awards are a prestigious, state-wide acknowledgement of excellence in education,” noted Dr. John G. Conyers, superintendent of District 15. “We are pleased that the Illinois State Board of Education has honored these two outstanding members of our staff by naming them ‘Those Who Excel’ winners.”
Vass has been active in education for more than 30 years as a teacher, department chair, educational consultant, and administrator. She has been assistant superintendent for personnel and human services since 1986, responsible for delivering human resource services to all district employees, managing recruitment, selection, placement, induction and training for all new staff members, and handling collective bargaining and relationships with union groups. She holds a B.S. degree in home economics education from Iowa State University, an M.S. Ed. from Purdue University, a certificate of advanced study in educational administration from Northern Illinois University, and an Ed.D. in educational administration, also from Northern Illinois.
Figlewicz has been a teacher in the gifted program at Sanborn School since 1975. She was a winner of the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1999 and a winner of the Illinois Science Teachers’ Association Top Ten Science Teachers in the State of Illinois in 1993. She earned her B.S. with honors from the University of Illinois and her master of education degree with honors from DePaul University.
Vass and Figlewicz will be honored at a Those Who Excel awards banquet April 13 in Springfield.
