New York City School Dean Thanks Pleasant Hill Students for Contributions
In the days following September 11, elementary students at Pleasant Hill School in Palatine wanted to find a way to help students in a school affected by the attack on the World Trade Center. Acting on a suggestion by Pleasant Hill PTA member Judy Benka, the students launched a three-month-long penny drive, raising $456 for a donation to Public School 7 in East Harlem, New York.
Paul Forbes, dean of students at P.S. 7, recently visited Pleasant Hill School to thank the students personally and accept a check for their contributions. Also on hand were Pleasant Hill principal Ed Nelson, Mrs. Benka, and Karen Miller, a representative of Nextel Communications, based in Elmsford, N.J. During the student campaign, Mrs. Benka contacted Nextel, which donated 20 cell phones and a year of free service to P.S. 7 and the school district.
