District 15 Students Participate in Space Camp
Twenty special needs students from Community Consolidated School District 15 junior high schools participated in a weeklong mission at the U.S. Space Academy in Huntsville, Ala., the week of May 7.
The students, who had been in training since January, participated in a variety of activities, including a shuttle launch simulation, a space trivia bowl, and rocket designing and launching. The District 15 students earned awards in three areas: “Mission Patch Design,” “Space Bowl,” and “Best Rocket Launch” in competitions that pitted them against teams of regular education students.
“Our students learned a lot about space exploration and learned even more about themselves and the importance of teamwork,” noted Brad Voehringer, special education coordinator. “The kids made new friends and shared experiences that will stay with them forever.”
