Sundling Junior High Students Raise $8,705 for Leukemia/Lymphoma Society
Seventh- and eighth-grade students from Walter R. Sundling Junior High School raised $8,705 for the national Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in a “Pasta for Pennies” fund raiser conducted by the school’s Student Council earlier this year.
During the week-long campaign, students bring in their own spare change and seek cash contributions from parents, relatives and friends. Classrooms compete to raise the most money for the cause. This year, teacher Roger Seely’s seventh-grade classroom raised $963, an average of $34 per student, and Andrea Turley’s eighth-grade classroom raised $574, an average of $21.26 per student.
The winning classrooms were treated to a pasta lunch courtesy of the Olive Garden Restaurant on April 18. Kari Hennigan, campaign coordinator for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, was on hand to present an award to the school for being the top fund-raising school in the state of Illinois of more than 200 Illinois schools and one of the top ten in the nation during the 2000 campaign.
Sundling’s 2001 contribution is expected to rank at or near the top in the state again this year, according to Keith Janosch, a teacher who works with the Student Council to sponsor the campaign. This is the fourth year Sundling has participated, and the school has been in the top five among participating schools in the state each year.
“The students love it,” Janosch noted. “They like the idea that they are helping other young people and fighting back against a disease that affects kids their own age.”
