Thomas Jefferson Students Collect Pennies
for Lincoln Library/Museum Project

Students from Community Consolidated District 15’s Thomas Jefferson School in Hoffman Estates are collecting “Pennies for Lincoln,” a fund-raising effort to finance the construction of the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Ill. Thomas Jefferson’s goal is to raise at least $350 for this historic and educational endeavor.

Thomas Jefferson is one of many elementary schools around the state participating in this campaign, which runs through May 15.

Ground for the facility was broken on Lincoln’s birthday, Feb. 12, 2001. The library will house the most complete collection of Lincoln documents and artifacts in the world, including the 46,000-item Henry Horner collection that features 1,500 documents signed or written by Lincoln, among them the 13th Amendment, a handwritten copy of the Gettysburg Address, and the Emancipation Proclamation.

A special educational play area for children, “Mrs. Lincoln’s Attic,” will feature historic clothing, oversized toys such as Lincoln Logs, and a dollhouse version of the Lincoln home, along with activities that highlight how children lived, played, and learned at the time of Lincoln. Schools participating in the “Pennies for Lincoln” campaign—including Thomas Jefferson—will be acknowledged in this exhibit.
