Former Astronaut Harrison Schmitt
to Visit District 15 on March 9

Former astronaut Harrison Schmitt, the last human to walk on the moon, will visit Community Consolidated District 15 schools on Friday, March 9.

An astronaut on the Apollo 17 mission to the moon, Schmitt will share his first-hand knowledge of the space environment with district science students. A live broadcast on the district’s Channel 44 television station will be held at 10 a.m., with a group of students on hand in the studio to question Dr. Schmitt and other students calling questions in from their home schools.

Dr. Schmitt also will make a brief visit to the district’s Mission Control Center at approximately 12:45 p.m. and will go from there to Carl Sandburg Junior High where he will meet with students in teacher Joyce Meyer’s class.

After Apollo 17, Dr. Schmitt served as a U.S. senator from New Mexico. A geologist by training, he is currently a consultant engaged in research with the Fusion Technology Institute on the utilization of resources from space, including the feasibility of using helium-3 from the moon to supply energy on earth. Dr. Schmitt is an adjunct professor at the College of Engineering of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and he continues to be an advocate for America’s space program.
