District 15 'Family Literacy Faire' Scheduled for March 3
Children and their parents will join to celebrate books and reading at School District 15's fourth annual "Family Literacy Faire" to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 3, at Winston Campus. Families who have children in district schools in grades kindergarten through third have been invited.
The day's program will include authors, storytellers and other engaging activities related to reading. Children will have the opportunity to dress as characters from popular books; costumes will be provided.
The goal of the Family Literacy Faire is to support literacy in the home and provide information on how parents can support their children in reading and related activities.
A special presentation for parents will feature Dr. Junko Yokota, a professor at National-Louis University, Evanston, an expert in the field of children's literature, in particular multicultural literature.
District volunteers will provide translations for families who do not speak English, supervise children in small sessions with reading aloud and other literacy activities, and babysitting for infants and children under school ages. There is a $5 charge per family, and participation is limited to 250 families.
