My child won't turn five until September 20, but I think she is ready for kindergarten. Does District 15 ever make exceptions to the September 1 cutoff?
- District 15 follows Illinois School Code requirements that a child be five years of age by September 1 of his/her kindergarten year to enroll. Occasionally, children whose fifth birthdays fall after the cut-off date but before October 31 may be found eligible to register for kindergarten. District 15 has developed specific criteria and procedures to assess children for early entrance to kindergarten. Parents may request an evaluation for the following school year by contacting the principal of their child’s home school any time between March 1 and May 1. For detailed information about how to request an evaluation, see the flyer, Early Entrance to Kindergarten or First Grade.
More information is available in the Student Services section.
My five-year old will not turn six until October 10, but he is completing kindergarten in a private school. Will he automatically be eligible to enter first grade?
- District 15 policy requires children to be six years old by September 1 to enter first grade. Completion of a kindergarten program in a private school does not automatically qualify a younger child to enter first grade. Your child will need to be screened to qualify for early entrance to first grade. For details on screening criteria and procedures, see the flyer, Early Entrance to Kindergarten or First Grade. You may request an evaluation by contacting the principal of your child’s home school any time between March 1 and May 1.
More information is available in the Student Services section.
Why do I need to let the school know if my child will be absent?
-
State law requires that schools contact either of a child’s parents to verify a child’s absence from school for any reason, including illness, doctor’s or dentist’s appointments, or family vacation days. Unless the school has received notification of a child’s absence from a parent, the school must call the telephone numbers on the registration form to verify the absence. The home telephone will be called first. If there is no answer, one or both parents’ work telephone number will be called. To minimize the number of calls the school has to make, please be sure to notify the school any time your child will be absent for all or part of the day. Each school is equipped with a 24-hour Absence Reporting number. (Your child’s school will provide the number or visit the District 15 Schools page and click on your school to view the Absence Reporting number.) Please be sure to supply the following information: 1) Your child’s full name; 2) his/her teacher’s name; 3) the date of the absence; and 4) the reason for the absence. You must call each day that your child is absent unless on the first call you indicate the total number of days your child will be absent.
Is transportation to school available?
-
Your child is entitled to bus transportation at no charge if you are a resident of District 15 and live 1-1/2 miles or more from the school he or she will attend. Transportation may be available to other areas on a paid basis. Riders are accepted to the extent that transportation services are available. No stops will be made less than one-half mile from the school building.
More
information is available on the Transportation Department
page.
Is food service offered at all schools?
-
A reasonably priced school lunch program offering nutritious and well-balanced meals is available at all 20 schools. Breakfast is also offered at several schools. Meals are prepared and packaged in individual servings in a central kitchen and delivered daily to the schools. At the junior highs, School Nutrition Services staff members prepare food on-site daily. Menus are determined based on student preferences, and several choices are available each day. A monthly menu is distributed to students and is also available on this Web site under "Menus" on the home page. Breakfast and lunch may be purchased by the day, week, month, semester, or year. The cost for breakfast is $1.15 per meal; the cost for lunch is $1.95 per meal for elementary students and $2.00 per meal for junior high students. Milk is available for sale at a cost of 35¢ per carton for students who bring a lunch from home.
School menus are available in the
School Nutrition Services section.
Where can I get attendance dates for the school year?
-
The official school calendar lists all dates for the entire school year. The last day of school shown is an estimated date which may change depending on whether the district has to designate any regular school days as non-attendance days due to snow or other inclement weather.
The
Official School Calendars are available in the About District 15 section.
The school calendar lists several Teacher Institute Days. What are those?
-
Teacher Institute Days (August 20-21, 2007; January 22, 2008; and May 1-2, 2008) are days specified in the teacher contract for staff development or team planning for school improvement or goal implementation. These are nonattendance days for students. The contract also specifies two nonattendance days in November (November 19-20, 2007) to allow for parent-teacher meetings.
Will schools be closed if the weather is bad?
-
Generally, schools will remain open except for extremely inclement weather. When severe weather conditions exist, parents must decide whether their children can get to school safely. Even when the school district decides to keep schools open, parents should review their own situation to decide whether to send their children to school. If a parent decides to keep the child(ren) at home, the absence will be considered "excused" and all work may be completed when the child returns to school. On inclement weather days, the school district encourages parents to check the District’s Web site for up-to-date information on school closings or listen to the radio or watch television for closing information. School closing information is aired by WGN-AM 720 and WBBM-AM 780 radio and television stations CBS-2, NBC-5, ABC-7, WGN-9, FOX-32, and CLTV News. Parents may also call the district's main number (847) 963-3000 for a recorded message.
More information is
available on the Safety/Emergency Closings page.
Can I visit my child at school?
-
We welcome parent visits to our schools and classrooms. To help make your visit meaningful, please schedule your visit in advance with the office staff or teacher. We do not encourage visits immediately before school holidays or at the end of the school year, since those are extremely busy times for teachers and other staff members. Please report to the office before visiting any program or classroom. According to the School Visitation Rights Act of 1993, parents/guardians are entitled to eight hours of employer-granted leave to attend school conferences or classroom activities involving the employee's child during any school year. If necessary, a parent/guardian may obtain Verification of Attendance forms for their employer from the principal.
How can I communicate with my child's teacher?
-
All classrooms are equipped with a telephone. Parents may call the teacher on the direct line. If class is in session
or if the teacher is out of the room, a message can be left in the teacher’s voice mailbox. The teacher will
return the call as soon as possible. Messages to students will be delivered to them by the end of the school
day. Parents are requested not to call unless it is urgent. Emergencies should always be directed to the school office. Students may use the classroom phone with permission from the teacher or office staff. You may also e-mail your child’s teacher. District 15 e-mail addresses consist of last name (to a maximum of seven characters) and first name initial followed by @ccsd15.net.
Will children play outdoors every day?
-
Weather permitting, students generally will have outdoor recess daily. Children should come to school appropriately dressed for the weather and active outdoor play. Each school provides playground supervision at recess and lunch hour.
Are classroom parties allowed?
-
At the teacher's discretion, two parties a year (at Halloween and Valentine's Day) may be held in the classroom under the direct supervision of the teacher. Room representatives and PTA volunteers may be asked to help on these days. School programs in keeping with the holiday season may be held before the winter break. Light refreshments may be served. Please contact your PTA representative for more information.
Does my child use the Internet during instruction?
-
Educational opportunities can be greatly enhanced by taking advantage of the extended learning resources available on the Internet. District 15 has developed a program to allow student access to the Internet. The district's goal in providing this service is to promote educational excellence by assisting in resource sharing, creativity, and communication. However, before your child may have access to the Internet, you must read the Network Use Guidelines and sign a Letter of Agreement. A copy of the guidelines and agreement is available in your school's office. Your written authorization is required before your child may use this resource.
The use of inappropriate material or language or violation of copyright laws may result in the loss of the privilege to use the Internet. Please remember that you are legally responsible for your child's actions. School District 15 takes precautions to prevent access to materials that may be defamatory, inaccurate, offensive, or otherwise inappropriate in the school setting. It is impossible, however, to control all material, and a user may discover inappropriate material. Ultimately, parent(s)/guardian(s) are responsible for setting and conveying standards for their children. The school district supports and respects each family's right to decide whether to authorize Internet access. For more information, see Parent's Guide to the Internet.
Does District 15 provide daycare?
-
The Children's Activity, Recreation, and Enrichment (C.A.R.E.) program, operated in conjunction with area park districts, offers a before- and after-school program for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. C.A.R.E. is affordable, safe, and enrichment-based. The staff of quality professionals and program leaders focus on developing warm, constructive relationships with children. Among the activities offered through C.A.R.E. are outdoor play, organized games, and arts and crafts. There is also a quiet place in which to do homework.
Does the district offer field trips or extracurricular activities?
-
District 15 may offer some field trips to support curricular goals. All schools also offer some voluntary extracurricular activities including clubs, music, and intramural sports (for students in fifth through eighth grades). Any student who participates in intramural or interscholastic sports must have written parental consent. An annual physical examination is necessary for participation in interscholastic sports.
