Owen K. Garriott Discovery Learning Center
The Owen K. Garriott Discovery Learning Center is a museum honoring
NASA astronaut and Antarctic explorer Owen Garriott. Dr. Garriott
has generously donated several personal items from his collection
to the learning center including an award from Richard J. Daley,
Mayor of Chicago, an award from Warsaw, Poland, a photo of the Skylab
crew, with signatures of the entire crew, photos related to experiments
involved in space, and a sample of his clothing worn in space. All
of these items will be displayed in the center that is also a tribute
to the 1998 and 2000 Antarctica expeditions, in which Dr. Garriott
participated. Rocks and meteorites from Antarctica as well as pictures
of the crew and their journeys are also on display.
As part of the learning center, the Earth Science Room is where
students can actively engage in earth science and geology experiments
such as identification and classification of rocks, properties of
rocks, the study of erosion and earthquakes, as well as how the
earth's structure has changed over time and how it relates to space.
