As the new superintendent of Community Consolidated School District 15, I’m currently in the process of becoming better acquainted not only with our 20 schools, but also with the seven communities the district serves. I am delighted to be part of a district that has such a long-standing reputation for educational excellence. My job is to ensure that District 15 continues to provide the highest possible quality of education to the approximately 12,400 students we serve.
District 15 includes 15 elementary schools (kindergarten through sixth-grade), four junior high schools (seventh and eighth grades), and one alternative school. Our schools reflect the rapidly changing demographics of the northwest suburban area. Students come from homes where as many as 70 different languages or dialects are spoken.
As I’ve traveled among the various schools in the district, I’ve been extremely impressed with the dedication and professionalism of the teachers and administrators I’ve met. They are truly focused on meeting student needs by creating a positive learning environment for all students—one that is both challenging and supportive. A solid foundation of academic instruction is enhanced with a focus on college readiness, character education programs, community service initiatives, and a variety of “fun” activities that reinforce the classroom lessons.
District 15 is fortunate to have strong community support for our students and schools. The district’s mission speaks of “building a connected learning community.” That includes the involvement of hundreds of individuals who volunteer thousands of hours yearly in the schools, area businesses and community organizations that bring resources and expertise to schools and classrooms, and community organizations that provide services to our students.
In the coming months, I will be working with the Board of Education to establish both short- and long-term goals and objectives for District 15. As part of this process, we will seek out a variety of viewpoints regarding what the district’s priorities should be and what needs to happen to turn those priorities into reality. I will be listening carefully to what our connected community has to say as we begin developing a strategic plan for the next few years. Your input will be welcome.
