Elementary and Junior High Breakfast Nutritional Information (August/September 2009) Á la carteElementary and junior high á la carte items are available for purchase, however, not all items are available at all schools, and not all items are available every day.
School meals are healthy meals. Studies show that students who eat school meals drink more milk and eat more fruits and vegetables than students who bring lunch from home. District 15 participates in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, which means that our meals meet federal guidelines for nutritional integrity based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Our meals must contain no more than 30% calories from fat, less than 10% saturated fat and must meet or exceed the recommended daily allowances of key nutrients such as vitamins A and C, iron, and calcium when averaged over a five-day period. Our daily menu selections are served in age-appropriate portions. All menus go through a nutritional analysis software program to ensure that we meet or exceed all federal program requirements. District 15 kitchens have no fryers, and all our potato and chicken products are baked. Many items we purchase are specially formulated for school meals by companies such as Tyson, Jenny-O, Land O Lakes, Simplot, and Schwan’s. Our pizza products are formulated using low-fat cheeses and whole-wheat crusts. We offer whole grain products every day. Most of our products are transfat-free as well. For the 2008-09 school year, the cost for breakfast is $1.25 per meal; the cost for lunch is $2.00 per meal for elementary students, and $2.10 for junior high students. Milk is available for sale to children who bring a lunch from home at a cost of 45¢ per ½ pint carton. Elementary and junior high à la carte items are available for purchase, however, not all items are available at all schools, and not all items are available every day. Free and reduced-price meals are available to children whose families are unable to pay full price. Application forms for these benefits are available at the schools and the Joseph M. Kiszka Educational Service Center.
Nutrition Services has a staff of 67 full and part-time employees working in 19 locations throughout the district. More than half of them have passed the Illinois Sanitation Certification examination. Safety and sanitation training is ongoing for all Nutrition Services staff members. These employees were responsible for preparing, driving, and serving more than 1,254,000 meals in 2007-08—about 7,000 meals per day!
