Election Process
School Board Elections
Four seats on the seven-member Board of Education were filled at the April 7, 2009, election. New Board members will serve four-year terms expiring in April 2013.
To be eligible to serve, a school board member must be on the date of election, a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years of age, a registered voter, and a resident of the state of Illinois and the school district for at least one year immediately preceding the election.
Elections are nonpartisan and board candidates do not indicate a political party affiliation. Candidates should be aware of financial conflict-of-interest limitations set forth in state law.
The Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) Web site (www.iasb.com/elections) provides many resources for school board candidates. For example, “Some Rules for Staying on the Ballot,” (PDF 44KB) “Your School Board and You,” (PDF 88KB)and “Code of Conduct for Members of School Boards” (PDF 43KB) are a few of the publications available. The IASB Web site provides access to information and publications regarding the next election that should be helpful for school boards, candidates, and voters.
Further information on becoming a candidate in the April 7, 2009, board election may be obtained by contacting June Becker, Board of Education secretary (847-963-3208), at the Joseph M. Kiszka Educational Service Center, 580 1st First Bank Drive, Palatine.
